Surgery for hyperthyroidism ( thyroidectomy ), large thyroid nodules, or nontoxic goiters may involve removal of much of the thyroid tissue, leaving some intact to continue to produce thyroid hormone. Risks of this procedure include damage to the nerves that control the vocal cords, damage to the parathyroid glands (resulting in low calcium levels), which lie just behind the thyroid gland, and bleeding . Hypothyroidism may also occur, but occurs less frequently than with radioactive iodine treatment. Persistent hyperthyroidism may also occur. If so, the entire thyroid gland is removed. In general, in the hands of an experienced surgeon, this is considered an effective and relatively safe procedure.

Over two-thirds of those who have radioactive iodine treatment will develop hypothyroidism (an under-active thyroid). This can occur anytime from one month after the treatment and is most common within the first 12 months after treatment but can occur later. You should have a blood test about four weeks after treatment, and should then be checked every one to three months in the first year - usually by your hospital clinic. It is very important not to miss these checks even if you feel well, as they can pick up an under-active thyroid before it has time to have effects on you. After that you should see your GP for an annual blood test, or at any time beforehand, if symptoms of hypothyroidism develop. It is straightforward to treat an under-active thyroid gland. Levothyroxine, which is thyroxine in tablet form, is used to replace the thyroxine that your thyroid gland is unable to produce.

If you are currently taking a thyroid hormone like iodine tablets will actually reduce the amount of these products needed – or even eliminate them altogether! 64

As always, please make sure you consult with your physician and take regular thyroid blood level tests before changing any established routine.

But be warned! Prepare yourself for the shock, surprise (and even negativity) from your doctor… because they simply won't believe it’s possible!

If you’ve never started on thyroid hormone, then all the better. You won’t have to worry about what your doctor thinks. Just take the iodine supplement we’re recommending, and watch your symptoms disappear.

After using conventional medical treatment methods to control thyroid storm, this is the time to use natural treatment methods to attempt to restore the person’s health back to normal, and prevent thyroid storm from reoccurring.  So at this point one can take Bugleweed, Motherwort, and other nutritional supplements and/or herbs.  Of course just taking supplements and herbs won’t restore your health, and it’s always wise to consult with a competent holistic doctor, rather than self-treat your own condition.  After all, while one doesn’t want to take antithyroid drugs for a prolonged period of time, you also don’t want to take Bugleweed or any other herb on a permanent basis.  The goal should be to get to the underlying cause of the condition if at all possible.

There are four types of thyroid cancers: papillary, follicular, anaplastic, and medullary cancer. These are associated with radiation treatment to the head, neck, or chest. Radiation treatment for benign (non-cancerous) conditions is no longer carried out in these areas, but was more common in the past. In other cases, a genetic mutation might be associated with thyroid cancer, either alone or in conjunction with other types of cancers (., multiple endocrine neoplasia, BRAF gene mutations). Less commonly, other cancers might metastasize to the thyroid (., lymphoma, breast cancer).
